Man takes family members hostage at gunpoint in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: An alleged drug addict suffering from a mental illness early Saturday morning held his family members hostage at gunpoint in Morgah area of the city, ARY News reported.

Residents of the area called in the police to rescue the family members after hearing a gunshot.

Springing into action, the police roped off the residence to rescue as many as 20 family members, after which an exchange of fire ensued.

The suspect was arrested in an injured condition after a gun battle. A policeman and family member sustained gunshot wounds during the shootout.

Talking to media, City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi Israr Ahmed said it seemed the gunman has been well acquainted with the use of weapons.

The CPO confirmed gunshot injury to a policeman, besides a family member. “All injured were taken to the hospital for medical treatment,” he added.
