QUETTA: With the deadlock persisting over caretaker set-up in Balochistan, Home Minister Sarfraz Bugti on Wednesday submitted a resolution to the provincial assembly seeking to postpone general elections in the province.

In the resolution, the minister has demanded that the elections should be delayed by a month and they should be held in August instead of July.Balochistan elections

Lately, President Mamnoon Hussain approved a summary, giving the go-ahead to holding of general elections on July 26.

Bugti contended that a large number of people will not be able to exercise their right to franchise in the month of July as they will leave for Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj.

Besides, he added, migration also takes place in that month owing to monsoon season, which can also affect electoral process.

The minister demanded of the provincial government to approach the Centre to conduct elections in the last week of August in lieu of July 26 so that the people of the province should exercise their right to vote.

Meanwhile, the opposition and the government in Balochistan have short-listed the two names for the caretaker chief minister, one of which will be decided in the coming 24 hours, well-placed sources said.

The two sides will pick, either Ashraf Jahangir Qazi or Allauddin Marri, to head the interim setup, the sources added.
