Minister stresses on importance of energy efficiency and conservation

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Energy Barrister Ali Zafar has stressed on the importance of energy efficiency and conservation, and directed to put concerted efforts to fully operationalise the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA).

The federal minister was chairing the first board meeting of the department attended by Secretary Power Rizwan Memon, Secretary Planning Division Shoaib Siddiqui, and senior officials of the ministries of Petroleum,  Industries, Climate Change, Science and Technology, and Housing, Oil and Gas  Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and provincial energy efficiency departments.

The board approved the plan of development of National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Policy, launch of National Energy Conservation Awards, and adoption of standard industrial classification codes by gas and electricity utility companies which will help in consumer identification.

It was decided that construction of new public buildings should have energy efficiency attributes reflected in PC-1, and compliance mechanism for construction of buildings as per building energy conservation codes.

In this regard, the Planning Commission was directed to ensure quick adoption of relevant PC-1 revised formats for construction of public buildings.

The board also appreciated the successful initiative of energy labeling scheme on fans and recommended to adopt similar initiatives for refrigerators, air conditioners and LED Lights to promote energy efficient products.

The Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) has been asked to conduct survey of aforementioned appliances from accredited labs and recommend energy efficiency levels for adoption.
