If it goes ahead, the planned event is sure to re-ignite memories of a period when relations between the two neighbours began to deteriorate and not least because most Pakistanis believe that the war was won by their nation.
The newspaper reported that the Union Government had directed the Indian armed forces to organise the “carnival” for the period running from September 1-23 later this year. It said that the Indian Army and Indian Air Force had been directed to organise “tableaux, exhibitions, processions, public lectures and film shows” on the 1965 war and that these would be held in the capital New Delhi.
The paper said that India’s Defence minister Manohar Parrikar is personally supervising the preparations. The minister was recently in the spotlight especially in Pakistan for remarks he said related to the use of terrorists by states when he said that if other countries did this, so could India.
