MQM celebrates 30th Foundation Day today
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) is celebrating its 30th foundation day today, ARY News reports.
A gathering will be held today in Karachi where MQM founder and Chief Altaf Hussain will address the workers, supporters and well wishers via videolink from London.
MQM came into being on March 18, 1984 by the name of Muhajir Qaumi Movement. The main aim of the political party is to rid the country from feudalistic and corrupt political system and to pave way for educated middle class for the national leadership.
The political party came into the limelight after their gathering at Nishtar Park in Karachi and their landslide victory in the Local Bodies elections in 1987.
Altaf Hussain left the country after a suicide attack was aimed at the MQM chief in1992 and settled in United Kingdom, where he still monitors the activities of the political party as of today.
The government of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) carried out a grand operation in the 90s against MQM in which many of the leaders and workers were killed and arrested in the crackdowns.
In 1997, the name of Muhajir Qaumi Movement was re-christened to Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
As of today, MQM and its leadership are continuing their mission for the rise of the educated middle class and raising their voices for the oppressed and the weak in the country.
