PESHAWAR: The National Accountability of Bureau (NAB) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday initiated an inquiry against Captain (retd) Safdar, the son-in-law of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

The anti-graft watchdog has sought the details of assets from Safdar, his wife Maryam Nawaz and their children. The bureau is probing the family for corrupt practices and possessing assets beyond known sources of income.

The bureau’s KP branch has written a letter to the deputy commissioners of the districts for the assets details, stating that an investigation is underway against Safdar and others in a corruption case.

Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and her spouse Safdar, were convicted by an accountability court in the Avenfield reference case on July 6. Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to ten years in prison, while Maryam was imprisoned for seven years.

Safdar was sentenced to one year prison without any fine. He was arrested by NAB on July 8 and has been serving time at Adiala Jail ever since.

Accountability Judge Muhammad Bashir also ordered forfeiture of their properties and imposed a fine of £8 million (approx. Rs1,292m) on the former premier and £2 million (approx. Rs323m) on his daughter.

They were awarded an additional one-year imprisonment, which will run concurrently, for not cooperating with NAB authorities.

The new federal cabinet also placed their names on the Exit Control List (ECL) on August 21. The Lahore High Court (LHC) has also denied their plea to set their convictions aside.
