LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Saturday requested an accountability court to issue arrest warrants for Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif and order his extradition.

Accountability Judge Jawadul Hassan resumed the hearing of the Ashiana housing scheme and Ramzan Sugar Mills cases today.

A lawyer representing the PML-N president and his son Hamza Shehbaz appeared before the judge and filed an application requesting the court to grant his clients exemption from appearance in today’s proceedings.

To a question about the whereabouts of the father-son duo, the counsel said Shehbaz has been out of the country for his treatment while Hamza couldn’t turn up owing to his ill-health.

The judge asked the counsel if Shehbaz will return to the country within two weeks.

At this, the lawyer replied he has submitted the PML-N president’s medical report in the court, according to which he has been advised by doctors to stay put for his treatment for some time.

He said his client wanted to appear in the court.

Opposing the exemption plea of the accused, NAB lawyer Waris Janjua contended before the court that Shehbaz went abroad without seeking prior permission from the court. He, therefore, requested the court to initiate action against Shehbaz and issue warrants for his arrest.

He further demanded that the court issue directives for extradition of the PML-N leader.

The judge, however, granted exemption to the PML-N president and his son from appearance in today’s hearing and adjourned the cases till May 25.
