LAHORE: The ad-hoc committee of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has elected Najam Sethi as interim PCB chairman, ARY News reported on Monday.
The decision was made during an interim committee meeting at Qadafi Stadium, Lahore. All the committee members expressed complete confidence in Mr. Sethi. The members, who could not make it to the meeting, voted through emails and telephonic conversation.
Najam Sethi has now assumed his responsibilities as interim PCB chairman.
Talking to media here, Sethi said the PCB management did not deal the Big 3 issue wisely. He said an interim committee meeting of the PCB will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) and all members will likely attend it.
He said: “I am elected PCB chairman under the PCB constitution. We will have a meeting tomorrow. The Islamabad High Court has also accepted prime minister’s powers prescribed under the PCB constitution. Under his powers, the PM has made the committee.” He said it should be clarified that PCB constitution did not stipulate any section to hold election. "Rather it specifies a point for nomination of the PCB chairman."
We are told to enact new constitution of PCB, said Sethi. He added that it was his priority to enact the new PCB constitution so that elections in the cricket board could be held transparently along with running other affairs.
He said Pakistan had been isolated at the international level. After the recent issue (Big 3), we have become a minority wing. Our board did not deal the issue wisely. Now a strategy has to be made for making things correct, he added.
The PCB has also issued a statement in this regard.
Shakil Sheikh, a committee member said all decisions made by the committee headed by Zaka Ashraf will be undone.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had dissolved the PCB Governing Body and removed Zaka Ashraf as cricket board chairman. He took the decision after amending the PCB Constitution in exercise of his powers being a patron-in-chief of the board.
