ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Law Minister Barrister Ali Zafar on Friday said that the session of the National Assembly must be convened by August 15 under the constitution.

The federal minister said that the session could be convened on August 13 or 14. The inaugural session will hold the oath-taking by MNA-elects, while independent candidates will be given time to decide their party affiliation.

This will be followed by the election of the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker, and ultimately the Leader of the House who will be the next prime minister. The caretaker government will cease to exist and will become dysfunctional after the swearing in of the prime minister.

He said Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will announce the final result on August 11, and the newly-elected parliamentarians will be given ten days to submit details of election expenses.

The commission will also issue the final list of parliamentarians elected on reserved seats for women and non-Muslims as per the party’s standing to complete the seats in the National Assembly.

The minister said the caretaker government has fulfilled its responsibility to conduct free and fair elections, while those parties alleging of rigging are making political statements.
