ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday said the sole objective of supporting Raza Rabbani as a joint candidate for the top slot of the Senate was to avert the political horse-trading in the elections for Senate’s chairman and deputy chairman posts.

Talking to press after appearing before the accountability court here, Sharif spoke highly of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leader and incumbent Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani.

“He is a suitable person for this position and it’s my personal wish to see him again as Senate chairman,” Sharif underlined.

The former premier said the change of Chief Minister in Balochistan before the Senate polls was no more a secret to anyone and an evident proof of the horse-trading.

On the occasion, he also called for legislation to curb the unlawful practice of buying and purchase of ballots.

“We are ready to hold talks with the [affected] political parties for legislation on the issue,” Sharif underscored.

Responding to questions raised by the journalists with regard to ex-President Asif Ali Zardari’s refusal to appoint Rabbani to head the Senate, Sharif said the ruling party would then contemplate over other names having similar credentials of Rabbani.

Moreover, he deplored the graft proceedings against him and his family members, as what he said, the ongoing cases against him are part of a grand conspiracy.

“It has been now six months but they [anti-corruption watchdog] have failed to prove the corruption charges against me,” he said.
