Years after death, Nazia Hassan still rules a million hearts

Elegant, stylish, beautiful and coupled with a melodious voice. Nazia Hassan had it all that made everyone in Pakistan (and abroad) fall in love with her.  Today marks the 17th death anniversary of the pop music icon in Pakistan.

Nazia Hassan was born on 3rd April 1965 in Karachi. She started her career as a child artist in Pakistan Television (PTV).

At the age of 15, Nazia Hassan reached new heights of fame after singing the song “Aap Jaisa Koi” for the Bollywood film Qurbani under the music direction from Biddu in 1970. Hassan won the filmfare award for “Best Female Playback Singer” for the song.

Her first album “Disco Deewane” was released in 1982 which set new records in Pakistan. Zohaib Hassan, her brother, also provided vocals in the album.

She also received the prestigious Pride of Performance award for her services to the music industry in Pakistan.

Her famous songs include Aap Jaisa Koi, Aag, Aankhain Milane Wale and Aa Haan.

Nazia Hassan also did social work throughout her life. She spent her earnings for the underprivileged people and founded the organization BAN (Battle Against Narcotics). She raised funds for the children in Rajasthan with the collaboration of former Information Minister Javed Jabbar.

Nazia Hassan was diagnosed with cancer and she passed away on 13th August 2000.

She was given titles such as Nightingale of Pakistan and Sweetheart of Pakistan. Her songs are still being played and listened even after 17 years of her death. She was indeed a trend setter in Pakistan.
