ISLAMABAD: Sohail Mahmood took over as the new Foreign Secretary of Pakistan on Wednesday.

After assuming his office, the foreign secretary met with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, according to Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India Sohail Mahmood replaced top diplomat Tehmina Janjua who retired on April 16. He was among the top contenders for the post since the start of the year.

FM Qureshi had made the announcement about Mahmood’s appointment during media talk in Multan last month.

He said the decision was taken following discussions with Prime Minister Imran Khan. He expressed gratitude to the outgoing foreign secretary Tehmina Janjua saying he had learnt a lot from her experience.

Lauding Janjua, the foreign minister said she was a brave and courageous woman and dealt with the challenges in an excellent manner.
