LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Thursday Oct 12, 1999 coup is the darkest day of political and democratic history of the country, ARY News reported.

In his remarks about the coup, the Chief Minister said it was a conspiracy to stunt the growth of Pakistan, adding that the nation is still bearing the brunt of the fallout of the military government, which inflicted immense losses on both the country and people.

Shahbaz said had it not been for the coup, the situation in Pakistan would have been different altogether. He resolved that no such step against democracy and constitution would be allowed to succeed in future.

Almost two decades have passed since military dictator retired Gen Pervez Musharraf dislodged an elected government of Nawaz Sharif on Oct 12, 1999.

The Chief Minister reiterated that continuation of democracy is the only way out for the challenges the country is facing.

He said that politics for personal interests needed to buried in greater interests of the country.
