SOCHI: Colorful fireworks brightened the cold dark night of Sochi as a grand opening ceremony of Sochi Winter Olympics was held at Fisht Olympic Stadium on Friday, ARY News reports.
The 40,000 Fisht Olympic Stadium was packed to capacity on the occasion.
Russian President Vladimir Putin officially started the Winter Olympics on the occasion. Athletes from Russia lit the Olympic Torch of the 2014 Winter Games.
A colorful display of fireworks was witnessed after the torch was lit.
With the budget of 30 billion dollars, Sochi is hosting the most expensive Winter Olympics in history. It was the first time in 30 years that the Games began before the Opening Ceremony.
A snowboarding slope style competition was held on Thursday whereas its final will be contested on Saturday (today). The finals for Biathlon, Cross Country Skiing, Freestyle Skiing, Snowboarding and Speed Skating will also be contested today as well.
Athletes from around the world will contest for 98 medals in the Olympics.
