TORONTO: Former Premier of Canadian Alberta province Alison Redford has urged the International community to examine the events of the past week to reduce the risk of nuclear conflict between Pakistan and India.

In an article published in a Canadian newspaper “The Globe and Mail”, she said Kashmir remains the primary conflict between India and Pakistan, which continues to exacerbate a dangerous cross-border relationship.

She further said Indian military jets breached the Line of Control (LoC) following the Pulwama attack without providing proofs.

“Pakistan had the right to defend itself”, she continued.

Appreciating Pakistan’s response to the Indian aggression, she said it was measured and reasonable.

She said India blames Pakistan for terrorist attacks but it does not mention its own terrorist attacks on Pakistani soil.

Last week, The New York Times had claimed that a threat of nuclear war between Pakistan and India still remains.

The situation between the neighbouring countries turned hostile in a tit-for-tat airstrikes following the Pulwama attack that killed over 40 Indian troops in occupied Kashmir on Feb 14.

In an opinion piece, the NYT’s editorial board has emphasised that although the Indo-Pak tensions have deescalated, for now, the threat of nuclear armed clash between the two countries still persists.

Regardless, the board stressed that “this relative calm is not a solution”. It noted that Islamabad and New Delhi were “long among the world’s most antagonistic neighbors” and that it was fortunate they found “the good sense to de-escalate”.
