ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani has said that Parliament is aware that there are weaknesses in the electoral laws and a special parliamentary committee is working on introducing reforms for the past two years, ARY News reported.

He was addressing a function in one of Islamabad’s local hotels.

Rabbani added that the administrative and financial powers of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) were increased.

The Senate chairman added that election commission moved away from its responsibilities in the past.

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader said that there is no advantage of strong laws if they cannot be implemented.

Rabbani said, “The elections should take place in a democratic manner. We have to assure the nation that change can only come through their votes.”

The Senate chief said that it is upto the Parliament to assure the people that it represents them.

Rabbani said that the political parties in the country are not being given the atmosphere to work. “The political parties have to bring democracy in their ranks first,” he added.
