‘Peaceful’ LG polls prove transparency of 2013 elections: Rasheed

LAHORE: Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid has said the first phase of local government elections in Punjab and Sindh has been successfully completed to further strengthen democracy in the country.

“The peaceful LG elections have proved transparency and fairness of general elections of 2013.”

Talking to newsmen in Lahore on Sunday, he hoped the next two phases will also take place as per the schedule.

Rashid said the elected representatives of local governments will provide solution to the problems of people at their doorstep immediately.

He said the electoral process is improving with every election taking place in the country. The society is also being democratized gradually.

The Minister said the Punjab government deserves appreciation for maintaining peace during the elections. Conversely the local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were marred by violence and irregularities.

Earlier, addressing a seminar on “Role of Media for promotion of Urdu language,” Pervaiz Rashid expressed the government’s resolve to implement Urdu bas official language.

He said the current independent judiciary, which is giving the landmark verdicts like promotion of Urdu as an official language, was born after the sacrifices rendered by various segments of the society.
