GADANI: At least 12 people died and more than 50 were injured after explosions in the oil containers at the ship-breaking yard here, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

The fire fighters struggling to extinguish the fire in the oil tank of the ship for two hours but failed to put out the blaze. The authorities have called fire tenders from Karachi to overcome the blaze.

The dead bodies and the injured were initially taken to Rural Health Centre Shaikhabad. The injured after first aid were later transferred to Civil Hospital Karachi for medical attendance.

Sindh provincial administration has declared an emergency across all government hospitals in Karachi and asked the paramedical staff to remain alert in view of the emergency situation.

The fire said to be erupted in a dismantled ship in the yard after four blasts in a series. Scores of the workers have been trapped in the yard, sources said.

The lack of proper safety and precautionary measures results in regular incidents causing losses of life and injuries to the workers.

AFP adds: “A gas cylinder explosion caused a huge fire in the ship which was being dismantled. Some 40 labourers sustained burns and at least five have been killed,” Balochistan home secretary Akbar Harifal told AFP, ruling out a deliberate attack.

Mohammad Hashim, a senior local administration official, confirmed the incident and the casualties.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed his “deep grief and sorrow” over the incident, according to a statement by his office.
