KARACHI: Reacting to the Supreme Court’s verdict on the length of disqualification of parliamentarians, Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said the people of Pakistan should decide the fate of politicians.

In a historic verdict, the apex court on Friday ruled that disqualification of public representatives, including two high-profile political leaders – Nawaz Sharif and Jahangir Tareen – under Article 62(1)(f) is for life.

In a statement on his official twitter account, the PPP chief said: “I am of the belief that it’s the people of Pakistan who should make such decisions about the fate of politicians.”

Taking an aim at his political rivals, he said: “Unfortunately it is PTI & PMLN themselves who have forced the judicialization of our politics. Naehal Nawaz & Tareen must now face the consequences of their actions.”

Former premier Nawaz Sharif and PTI leader Jahangir Tareen were disqualified under the Article 62(1)(f) for lifetime for being dishonest.

Article 62(1)(f) reads: “A person shall not be qualified to be elected or chosen as a member of Majlis-e-Shoora [Parliament] unless-…he is sagacious, righteous and non-profligate, honest and ameen, there being no declaration to the contrary by a court of law.”
