DUBAI: Middle-order batsman Muhammed Hafeez’s fight till the end could not anchor Peshawar Zalmi against Multan Sultans’ mountainous score of 183 in Dubai on Tuesday as the Pakistan Super League entered round-robin stage.

Hafeez’s 56 from 41 balls, two 6s and five 4s, was briefly partnered by Dwayne Smith (18), Riki Wessels (22) and Liam Dawson (32). However, Zalmi had an uphill task before them to secure the victory, which they failed to accomplish.

Sohail Tanvir and Kieron Pollard grabbed three wickets each, for 14 and 37 respectively, while Mohammad Irfan got two for 32.

Sohaib’s swashbuckling 85 off 42 had propelled Multan to reach tournament’s highest score of 183-3 against strong bowling of Peshawar in 16th match of the PSL.

Sangakara and Ahmed started off aggressively with a brisk opening partnership of 51 runs in first eight overs to pile pressure on Zalmi.

Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson took in form Kumar Sangakkara on  51 to give a breakthrough to his team. Sangakara scored 28.

Sangakara’s departure brought Sohaib Maqsood on to the crease who partnered with Shehzad to distract the opponent bowlers to put 58 runs on the scoreboard.

Ahmed Shehzad (run-a-ball 37) unluckily got run out on the total of 107.

Shoaib Malik (13) was the third wicket which Umaid took for Peshawar.

Pollard then carried the innings till the end with Sohaib scoring 16 off eight balls.

Umaid and Dawson shared one wicket apiece.

Earlier, Skipper Peshawar Zalmi, Muhammad Hafeez won the toss and invited Multan Sultans to bat first.

Multan is leading the points table with 9 points.

Hafeez was leading the Peshawar Zalmi’s side in the absence of Darren Sammy who got injured during the match against Quetta.
