Pakistan, for the first time in 60 years, failed to qualify for the Olympics following a shock 1-0 loss to Ireland. They had to reach the fifth position to confirm their place in the summer games next year.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is also patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), termed the team’s performance in the Olympics qualifiers as “embarrassing”.

The prime minister has sought explanation from Pakistan Hockey Federation as to how the former three time gold medalist could perform in such a deplorable way.
