FAISALABAD: Police claimed to have foiled a terror bid to target Muharram processions in Chiniot, by arresting two terror suspects and recovering a huge cache of weapons from their possession, ARY News reported.

Acting on information, the police personnel carried out a targeted raid in a neighbourhood of Chiniot and arrested two suspected terrorists and seized a vehicle loaded with a huge cache of weapons, police officials said.

The seized weapons included 16 pistols, 19 rifles, and more than 25ooo rounds of various caliber, they said, adding that the identities of the suspected terrorists are yet to be ascertained.

They expressed apprehension that weapons could have been used to carry out terror activities in the month of Muharram.

Earlier on Sept 18, two suspected terrorists were shot dead and four others managed to escape after a fierce gunfight with the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab police in Jalalpur Pirwala.

According to the CTD police, a targeted raid was carried out in Jalalpur Pirwala following a tip-off about presence of terrorists there.

CTD officials said as the law enforcement personnel cordoned off the area and challenged the terrorists to surrender, they opened fire at the personnel instead. In the retaliatory fire, two terrorists were killed while four others managed to escape from the scene of the encounter.

The officials said they have recovered arms, hand grenade and explosive material from their possession.
