Police officer fatally shoots ‘pregnant’ woman

BAYTOWN: A police officer in US state of Texas was caught on camera shooting and killing a 44-year-old woman while trying to arrest her, several reports in US media said.

In a video recorded by a witness and released on social media, the unnamed officer can be seen approaching the woman in Baytown city and then shooting her while she kept shouting.

DISTURBING VIDEO: VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED

#Repost @leemerrittesq・・・•This woman was walking to her apartment when she was stopped by a Baytown police officer (near Houston, TX). The officer claimed to have knowledge of out standing warrants for the woman and attempted to perform an arrest. •What happens next is an issue that lies at the root of the problem of police brutality in the deadliest police culture in the modern world. The video speaks for itself. This cop eventually murders this woman shooting her up to five times. He has claimed that she was resisting so he had to use force to perfect the arrest. During the application of force he lost control of his taser gun and “fearing for his life” he drew his firearm and “shot until the threat was terminated.” This woman with possible outstanding warrants was walking home and not cooperating with a cop in the middle of the night. At this point he had so many choices other than to use force to bring about her compliance. He could have followed at a safe distance, waited for back up, enforced the warrants later. These weren’t just some better choices he could have made. These steps are what he should have been trained to do. They represent the standard operating procedures for law enforcement officers. He violated them and as a result a woman is dead. A woman that who is rumored to be pregnant and suffering from a mental health disorder is dead. A woman who lived in a community like so many black communities that are over policed and who was being profiled. A woman who had warrants which only represents accusations from another incident that likely didn’t require police involvement. •People should not resist the police or disobey orders— especially in this police culture. They invariably will. This SHOULD NOT give cops the green light to shoot them down like dogs in the street. This didn’t have to happen. Until we hold cops accountable and change the laws concerning when deadly force is permissible it will continue to happen. •My office has not been retained in this case. These are just my thoughts as I have been inundated with calls and messages all morning. This has to stop. @realdlhughley @theshaderoom @hollywoodunlocked @balleralert @robinmeade

In the 30-second footage, the woman can be heard telling the officer, “I’m actually walking to my house,” and shouting, “I’m pregnant,” before she is killed.

The officer apparently recognized her from previous encounters and knew she had “outstanding warrants,” according to a statement from Lt. Steve Dorris of the Baytown Police Department.

“A struggle ensued when the officer attempted to arrest her for those warrants. The officer deployed his Taser on the woman, but, as he was trying to handcuff her, she apparently got hold of the device and used it on him,” Dorris said.

The police department later maintained that the woman, identified as Pamela Turner, was not pregnant at the time of the shooting, adding that they are conducting an autopsy.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave while the Baytown Police Department and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the fatal shooting.
