ISLAMABAD: A high-level meeting attended by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) top brass decided not to support PML-N-backed Maulana Fazlur Rehman for upcoming presidential polls, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

According to ARY News correspondent, the meeting chaired by party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari unanimously decided not to support Fazl and go to the polls with PPP’s own presidential candidate Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan.

The meeting discussed the suggestions put forward by Fazl in a meeting with party chief Bilawal Bhutto and co-chairman Asif Zardari and decided to reject Fazl’s proposal.

Sources say party co-chairman will contact Maulana Fazlur Rehman to formally apprise him about the party decision.

Fazlur Rehman was jointly fielded by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), Awami National Party, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and National Party against PTI’s Arif Alvi.

Though a part of opposition alliance named “Alliance for Free and Fair Elections”, PPP named Aitzaz Ahsan as their candidate for presidential elections despite strong opposition by PML-N.

Fazl had earlier expressed hope that he will persuade the PPP to support him or nominate a joint candidate for the presidential polls who is acceptable for PML-N too as the former ruling party had expressed reservations on Aitzaz’s name.

With a divided opposition, which is otherwise formidable in numbers, the Presidential Election on September 4, will prove a cakewalk for the PTI candidate, Dr. Arif Alvi.
