ISLAMABAD: Senior leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Nadeem Afzal Chan is likely to join the Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf. He is expected to make this announcement on April 25.

Mr Chan has held a meeting with Imran Khan at Banigala and invited him to visit his residence on April 25. PTI has confirmed the meeting, adding that Jahangir Khan Tareen and Shah Mehmood Qureshi were also present during the audience.

The PPP leader has reportedly accepted invitation to join the PTI and he would announce his decision on April 25.

The PPP is facing unprecedented crisis in Punjab ahead of elections after their key members including Firdous Ashiq Awan, Imtiaz Safdar Warraich and Nazr Gondal defected to the PTI.

Chan started his political career as a tehsil nazim from Malakwal, Mandi Bahauddin in 2001. He was elected to the National Assembly from constituency NA-64 in 2008 general elections on the PPP’s ticket. He also contested the general election 2013 from the same constituency but could not succeed.

In October 2017, Chan resigned as Pakistan People’s Party General Secretary in Punjab, citing ‘moral grounds’. Co-chairman PPP Asif Ali Zardari pressed him to withdraw his resignation but he declined to do so while affirming his affiliation with the party as a member.

It’s been many months that reports of Chan defecting to PTI are going rounds.
