PPP’s Imtiaz Shaikh wins Shikarpur by-election

SHIKARPUR: Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh of the Pakistan People’s Party has won the by-election PS-11 Shikarpur of the Sindh Assembly. 

According to unofficial unconfirmed results, Shaikh received 36, 200 votes and has been declared the winner.

Nasir Mehmood Soomro of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazl) secured 27,400. Therefore, Shaikh has emerged as the winner after a margin of 8,800 votes.

The seat fell vacant after Imtiaz Shaikh quit the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional and joined the PPP and resigned from the seat.

His main competitor Nasir Mehmood is the son of late Khalid Mehmood Soomro, former JUI-F Secretary General Sindh who was shot dead by armed assailants in Sukkur in 2014.

There were three other candidates in the constituency which have 135,430 voters, for which 105 polling stations have been set up and all of them have been declared as sensitive.

The polling was held uninterrupted from 9 AM to 5 PM. Around 700 Rangers and 2400 policemen have been deployed for election security.

Former President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed his congratulation to party workers for the victory. He called on party worker to dedicate themselves for the service of the people and follow in the footsteps of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
