PPP’s Jahangir Badar passes away in Lahore

ISLAMABAD: Secretary General of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Jahangir Badar passed away in Lahore on Sunday night, ARY News reported.

Jahangir Badar was admitted to a private hospital in Defence Housing Authority in Lahore two days ago after suffering a cardiac attack, where he passed away during treatment.

He was also suffering from kidney ailment.

Jahangir Badar was one of the key figures in the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD) in the 1980s against the military regime of General Zia-ul-Haq.

He was born on 25th October 1944 in Lahore. He was elected as a member of National Assembly (MNA) in 1988 on the ticket of PPP. He served as Federal Minister for Petroleum & Natural Resources, Science & Technology and Housing & Works in Benazir Bhutto’s first tenure as prime minister of Pakistan.

Badar was elected a Senator in 1994 and was given the portfolio of the Federal Minister for Political and Religious Affairs in the second stint of Benazir Bhutto as the premier. He was re-elected as Senator in March 2009 on a general seat as a PPP candidate.

He became the chairman of Senate Committee on Parliamentary Affairs in 2009.

Badar’s funeral prayers will be offered at Punjab University in Lahore at 04.00 pm on Monday (today).

Former president Asif Ali Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and leaders of other political parties have expressed their grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Jahangir Badar.
