Prayer leader gunned down in Karachi

KARACHI: Unknown armed assailants shot dead prayer leader of a local mosque in the city, ARY News reported.

Habibur Rehman was at his home in Masjid Siddiq Akber in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 7 when two unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen barged into the residence and sprayed him with bullets.

The culprits immediately fled the scene after shooting dead prayer leader. Police said the victim was moved to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, but he succumbed to his wounds.

Police also recorded the statement of slain cleric’s son. He said his father was shot dead by suspect named Mairaj. Further investigation is underway.

Karachi’s law and order situation began deteriorating once again after assassination of famed qawwal Amjad Sabri in the city on June 22.

He was shot dead by two gunmen riding a motorcycle as he drove his car to a TV studio where he was due to perform for a Ramazan show.

Police called the killing an “act of terror” without naming possible suspects.
