With general elections just around the corner, intense meetings and heated debates between provincial governments and opposition parties were witnessed for the caretaker setup, however unfortunately every discussion converged to a standoff.

In Punjab, following the gridlock between government and opposition, a parliamentary committee has been constituted to decide the name of caretaker prime minister.

The committee will reportedly comprise Rana Sanaullah, Malik Ahmed Khan, Zaeem Qadri, Rana Mashood, Mehmood-ur-Rasheed, Sibtain Khan, Murad Raas and Faiza Malik.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) will forward its final names for the parliamentary committee to the speaker today. The party has nominated Hasan Askari Rizvi, Yaqoob Izhar, and Ayaz Amir for caretaker chief minister slot.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has put forth the names of former Naval Chief Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah, former Intelligence Bureau Director-General Aftab Sultan, Justice (retd) Sahir Ali, and former Inspector-General Punjab Tariq Saleem Dogar for the interim position.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, even the parliamentary committee failed to reach any consensus and the persistent deadlock has now finally handed the decision on interim chief minister to the election commission.

After fifth rounds of talks between government and opposition, the slot of the chief minister of Balochistan remained inconclusive owing to lack of consensus. Balochistan government has recommended the name of Hussain Baksh Bangalzai and opposition nominated Ali Ahmed Kurd.

However, only in Sindh, the outgoing government and opposition have named Fazlur Rehman as the caretaker chief minister of the province. Rehman served as Sindh chief secretary from 2007 to 2010, after which he was retired from service.
