PTI nominates Azam Swati as Senate opposition leader
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on Friday decided to nominate Azam Swati as its candidate for the Leader of Opposition in the Senate.
The decision to name the billionaire businessman was taken after detailed deliberation during a session of the party’s core group held at the residence of PTI chairman Imran Khan in Bani Gala.
PTI spokesman said that it was the right of the party to have its candidate as opposition leader. All independent senators have to show their political affiliations by March 22.
The party also decided to start a nationwide protest campaign from April 29, and will organise a historic political gathering in Lahore as part of the election campaign.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has nominated Senator Sherry Rehman as it candidate for opposition leader, and if elected she will become the first woman to hold the position.
The Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM-P) on Thursday announced that it would support the PTI candidate for the position as it does not want to vote for a PPP candidate.
