LAHORE: The polling to elect a lawmaker for the vacant Senate seat from Punjab will begin Wednesday (today) in the Punjab Assembly.

A tough contest is expected between Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Khawaja Ahmad Hassan and ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Shahzad Waseem for the Senate seat.

During the polling process, the provincial election commissioner will be the presiding officer of the election.

The voting process will take place in the Punjab Assembly from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The Punjab legislature have presently 358 members, of which 185 belong to the PTI and its allied parties.

The senate seat was vacant after PTI’s Chaudhry Ghulam Sarwar was appointed by the government as Governor of Punjab.

In a Senate election in Balochistan last month, Sarfraz Bugti of Balochistan Awami Party emerged victorious, which was left vacant by Mir Naimatullah Zehri.

Former home minister, Bugti garnered 37 votes in Balochistan Assembly against rival Rehmatullah Kakar, backed by opposition alliance who secured 20 votes.

A total of 57 out of 61 members of the Balochistan assembly cast their votes in the election.

The general seat fell vacant after Naimatullah Zehri won the election to a provincial assembly seat in July. He resigned from the upper house of parliament after official notification of his victory from the Shaheed Sikandarabad seat of Kalat district was issued.
