NEW DELHI: The Modi-led government in India has imposed a Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the opposition has gone berserk over it. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi says that the GST is a ” Gabbar Singh Tax+ ,” aimed at capturing the people’s hard-earned money.
“Congress GST= Genuine Simple Tax. Modi ji’s GST= Gabbar Singh Tax…..” Rahul tweeted, repeating his attack from a day before.
His meaning: The Modi government’s tax reform is aimed at grabbing the taxpayers’ money, as opposed to the Congress’s ‘Genuine Simple Tax.’
“Their GST is not GST, but Gabbar Singh Tax,” Rahul had said at the Congress’s ‘Navsarjan Gujarat Janadesh’ rally in Gandhinagar on Monday.
The GST has long been a bone of contention between the BJP and the Congress, with allegations and barbs being traded on a regular basis.
Just a week ago, the Congress had accused the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “distorting” the vision of the tax as perceived by the former.
“The BJP government totally distorted the spirit behind the GST, as envisaged by the Congress. In both spirit and implementation, the end-product is drastically different from the policy that the Congress conceived,” it said.
