Census: Pakistan urges India to ensure safety of enumerators near LOC

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Army on Tuesday contacted Indian Army through hotline as part of a confidence-building measure regarding the movement of civil and military enumerators near LoC as part of the ongoing census.

According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), Indian Army has been approached to inform ground troops about the movement of civil and military enumerators to civil populated areas lying close to LOC in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The step is aimed at ensuring safety and security of civil and military personnel in wake of unprovoked targeting and persistent ceasefire violations by the Indian Army.

The second and final phase of the sixth national housing and population census began today in 87 districts of the country.

The first census in the country was conducted in 1951, followed by second in 1961, third in 1972, instead of 1971 due to political turmoil, and the fourth in 1981.

The fifth census, which was due in 1991, was held in March 1998. The army assisted the authorities in conducting the last census 19 years ago.
