Samiul Haq not given mission of Taliban talks: govt
ISLAMABAD: Maulana Samiul Haq was not given responsibility to hold talks with Taliban, spokesman of Prime Minister House said on Thursday.
The spokesman refuted a recent statement of Samiul Haq, chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sami, in which the influential cleric had distanced him from holding talks with Taliban militants.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had not entrusted Maulana Samiul Haq any specific mission for holding dialogue with Taliban in a meeting with him, the spokesman said. The Prime Minister had talked generally about curbing terrorism, the statement said.
The spokesman denied the impression created by the JUI-S head that the government not heeding to his advice.
Samiul Haq didn't inform about any progress in dialogue within last three weeks, the spokesman said.
Maulana Samiul Haq in his statement said that the government not showing seriousness about the talks with Taliban and announced to stay away from the process of dialogue with militants.
