KARACHI: Following the collapse of a three-storey residential building leaving at least six dead, Sindh Building Control Authority Demolition (SBCA) has decided to demolish the surrounding dilapidated buildings in Liaquatabad area of the metropolis to prevent further losses, ARY News reported on Wednesday.

Issuing notices to residents and granting time to vacate the buildings, SBCA Deputy Director Sajjad Khan said that the buildings would be demolished without using machines because of narrow alleys.

“The buildings will be demolished manually [will be brought down by labourers] as the passage for entrance of demolition machines is too congested,” he said.

The SBCA estimated that the demolition of the buildings may take around six days while the demolishing of buildings to be started on Wednesday noon (today).

It is to be mentioned that after the building collapse incident on late Monday night, the SBCA officials paid a visit to the area on Tuesday night and declared the surrounding buildings dangerous while issuing notices to the residents.

The incident claimed six lives and wounded 12 others.

A witness, resident of the area, recounted that the building caved in at around 2:30 am with a bang. She said the building was in a dilapidated condition where several families were housed.

In June, SBCA issued eviction notices to residents of 354 unsafe buildings in wake of the first monsoon spell in the city.
