SC orders govt to hold LG elections by Nov 15

TOP NEWS

ISLAMABAD: While announcing its verdict in the local government (LG) elections case, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the government authorities to hold LG polls by November 15, 2014 in all the provinces, ARY News reported.

A three-member SC bench, headed by Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, conducted the proceedings of the case wherein it released its short order.

The court asked the federal and provincial governments to enact legislations in a given period of five months in connection to holding LG elections.

The SC bench also announced to give powers of conducting elections and delimitations to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The court ruled that the power of provinces to carry out delimitations was unconstitutional. The court observed that local government elections could not be held in the country for last nine years, which was against the constitution.
