ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday gave time to the PML-N leader and State Minister Talal Chaudhry’s lawyer to submit response in a contempt of court case.
The PML-N leader along with his lawyer Kamran Murtaza appeared before the three-judge bench, headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, as it resumed the hearing into the contempt of court case against him.
The counsel told the judges that he had been engaged lately to plead the case after the demise of his client’s previous lawyer. He, therefore, requested that he needed at least 10 days to prepare his arguments for the case.
Justice Ejaz Afzal said he had already given ample time to the PML-N leader to respond and it couldn’t give more time.
He adjourned the hearing till Feb 26 and directed the counsel to submit his response on next hearing.
Earlier, the court had issued the minister a show-cause notice to explain why he may not be proceeded against for committing contempt of court by making contemptuous speeches against the judiciary.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar had taken a suo motu notice of the contemptuous statements given by the minister against the judiciary.
The PML-N president Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and a number of party leaders have been heaping scorn on the judiciary since July 28, 2017 when the apex court sent the former premier packing.
At PML-N’s Jarianwala public meeting, Talal Chaudhry bitterly criticized the judiciary, saying: “There was a time when the Kaabah was full of idols. Today, the judiciary is also full of PCO judges.”
He had asked the party chief to throw “those judges out because they will not do justice.”
