ISLAMABAD: The chief justice of Pakistan remarked Thursday that if Ishaq Dar does not come back to Pakistan, then the court will announce its verdict against him.

The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, took up the hearing of a case against former finance minister for owning assets beyond known means of income.

On the onset of hearing, the Attorney General informed the court about the two ways of bringing an absconder back to the country. First, employing Interpol to bring back Dar and second is to have a contract of exchanging the accused in any criminal offense with the respective country.

The new government is working on the second option, he apprised the apex court.

While granting a period of 10 more days on the request of the Attorney General, the top judge observed that the Supreme Court will announce the verdict against Dar in absentia, if the accused does not show up.

The bench member Justice Ejazul Ahsan, displeased with National Accountability Bureau’s performance, said that the anti-graft watchdog had not taken any effective measures yet.

The Foreign Ministry informed the bench that upon contacting Interpol, the ministry was told by the international organization to coordinate with National Accountability Bureau and Federal Investigation Agency, for the matter.

The top court sought the option of blocking the passport of a Pakistani citizen who is a declared absconder and summoned by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
