Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. It causes fever and severe joint pain. Other symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash.
As the reports of the disease’s spread in Karachi are doing rounds, Executive Director Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) Seemi Jamali shared preventive and precautionary measures to protect oneself from Chikungunya.
Talking exclusively to ARY News, she said that incubation period of this disease is from 3 to 7 days.
About the symptoms of the disease, she said after the incubation period, you fall sick for 3-4 days. Then, you start feeling pain in joints, headache and vomiting.
“There is no need to panic, because it is not as fatal disease as compared to dengue. You need to adopt preventive measures for this disease,” she said.
She shared some preventive measures with the audience:
Use door screens or nets to keep mosquitoes outside
Keep your surrounding clean
Empty standing water from containers like flowerpots and buckets
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants and use mosquito repellant lotions
Drink more and more water
Seemi Jamali said breeding time of chikungunya mosquitoes is daytime. We should try to control breeding of mosquitoes by spraying anti-mosquito medicines.
