ISLAMABAD: The Senate’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice on Tuesday approved a bill increasing three FATA seats in the National Assembly from six to nine, ARY News reported.

The bill has also increased the provincial seats of FATA districts from 16 to 20.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have opposed the bill.

Veteran PML-N leader Saad Rafique said elections were being delayed in the FATA in the name of representation. It was a dangerous play, he said. He demanded to let elections take place in FATA.

On May 6, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had announced to hold elections on 16 seats of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly in the tribal districts of former Fata region on July 02.

The ECP had announced the election schedule for the provincial assembly election in the merged districts of the tribal region.

The appeals against rejection or approval of the nomination papers could be filed up to May 22, while May 29 will be the last date of withdrawal of the nomination papers.

The ECP will allot election symbols to candidates on May 30.
