Sheikh Rashid claims even PML-N senators voted for Sanjrani
ISLAMABAD: As the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) suffered a defeat for the Senate chairmanship, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has claimed that even PML-N senators voted for opposition candidate Sadiq Sanjrani.
Sheikh Rashid, while speaking to ARY News on Monday, said that he expected a ‘photo finish’ in
the race for Senate chairman, but did not realise that there would be such a massive margin,
which implies that even several PML-N senators have voted against their party candidate.
Sadiq Sanjrani, who was jointly backed by the Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Tehreek-e-
Insaf, received 57 votes and was elected as Senate Chairman, while the PML-N candidate Raja
Zafar-ul-Haq received 46 votes which was far lower than expected.
Sheikh Rashid said that Sanjrani’s election was a setback to former prime minsiter Nawaz Sharif
and the PML-N, and has thwarted several of their plans including attempts to bring electoral
reforms and reign in the judiciary and the army.
He further said that even though PML-N brought a much better candidate Raja Zafar-ul-Haq,
however the election proves that PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari was in a better position to
make a decision.
He said the Sanjrani’s election was milestone for Balochistan and a good omen for democracy and
rule of law , while the next general elections will bode well for the country.
He said that Zardari and PTI chairman Imran Khan deserved equal credit for Sanjrani’s election.
