Shraddha Kapoor bags GIMA nomination!
Shraddha Kapoor has been nominated for the auspicious GIMA award in the Best Singer category. The actress, who is rumored to be dating her Ashiqui 2 co-star Aditya Roy Kapoor, was ecstatic upon hearing the news. An excited Shraddha said, “I was absolutely euphoric when I got to know that I have been nominated for a singing award. Singing is something which I have always been interested in but not really pursued so getting such recognition really means a lot.” She further added, “I am really thankful to Mohit actually. I had casually mentioned it to him that I would like to sing during Aashiqui 2 shoot but during Ek Villain it was he who brought it up and encouraged me to sing.”
The trend of Bollywood superstars lending their voice to songs seems to be catching on. Amitabh Bachchan sang ‘Piddly’ in Shamitabh whereas Alia Bhatt crooned Sooha Saaha for Highway and Samjhawan for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Shraddha herself hails from a family with a singing background, her grandfather Pandharinath Kolhapure is a classical singer with whom she trained as a child. The nomination for Galliyan even surprised Kapoor, who seems shell shocked at the prospect of competing with some of the biggest singers in India.
Shraddha even wanted to sing for Ashiqui 2 but her director Mohit Suri only permitted her to sing in Ek Villain. Ashiqui 2 was also famous for its various songs such as Sun Raha Hai Na Tu, Tum Hi Ho and Chahun Mai Yaa Na. However, when the time was right, Mohit himself urged Kapoor to sing Galliyan for Ek Villain, a move which paid off. The song garnered critical acclaim from all quarters and established the heroine as a versatile personality in Bollywood. Following the success of her song Galliyan, Shraddha was approached to sing a Kashmiri folk song for the movie Haider, which starred Shahid Kapoor and Tabu.
It’s always nice and refreshingly natural to see a Bollywood dame who can sing hit numbers as well. Who knows, Shraddha may follow in Priyanka’s footsteps and venture out into singing with international musicians? For now, we would like to wish her luck for the upcoming GIMA awards and hope she bags a statue as well!
