SIC activists, police scuffle over red zone protest

TOP NEWS

The SIC workers were carrying body of their slain leader Tariq Mehboob who died in police custody couple of days ago.

The activists wanted to carry the coffin to Chief Minister House, which falls under the red zone, to lodge their protest. However, police contingent stopped them at M.A. Jinnah Road, Saddar, from proceeding further.

The law enforcement agencies have called water cannons to the site to cope with any incident.

Both the portions of the road of CM House have been blocked with containers to prevent protesters from converging there.

Anjuman Naujwanan-i-Islam (ANI) chief and member of SIC Tariq Mehboob died in custody on Saturday.Officials initially asserted that Mehboob died of a heart attack, but his family suspected that Mehboob was tortured to death.

Last week, Mehboob along with seven others were nabbed by paramilitary force personnel near Yousuf Plaza in Block 16 of Federal B area, and shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation. The ANI chief was accused of providing refuge to target killers which is punishable under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.
