MITHI: The Sindh government has decided to dispatch fodder for animals in Tharparkar as part of measures to tackle severe drought, ARY News reported.

In the first phase, the government will send fodder worth Rs 50 million to the drought-hit area of the province. The allocation of amount for the next phase will be decided by the government afterwards.

Reports had surfaced a few months ago that dozens of goats, sheep, cows and camels died in drought-stricken Achro, Thar and there are reports about death of a large number of peacocks in the arid region.

It was reported that people in Thar had started treating their ailing animals on self-help basis, however, it is not the diseases but hunger was killing animals. Locals in White Desert use donkey, camel and other animals to pull water from dug wells

Hundreds of children have also fallen victim to malnutrition in Thar and died.

Last month, the Supreme Court had summoned the Sindh chief secretary and other top officials in a case pertaining to the deaths of children owing to malnutrition in Tharparkar.

The chief justice remarked that he would himself visit Tharparkar to monitor the situation in the drought-hit desert region.

MNA Ramesh Kumar Vankwani during the hearing told the judges that there is a need to establish basic health centers at the level of villages in Tharparkar. Thar is the place where one could find every kind of herbs for medicines available the world over, he claimed.

He said the health department alone couldn’t address the situation as the participation of other departments would be necessary for relief efforts in the region.
