Sochi Winter Olympics: Hosts Russia tops medals table

SOCHI: Hosts Russia have moved on top of the medals table of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics here in Sochi, ARY News reports on Sunday.

In the bronze medal match of Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament, Finland defeated United States 5-0 to stand third at the podium. The gold medal match will be played between Sweden and Canada.

Netherlands set a new Olympic record in the Speed Skating Ladies' Team Pursuit after they defeated Poland in the Final A. The Dutch completed the race 2 minutes and 58.05 seconds. The Russians came third after defeating Japan in Final B of the competition.

Norway swept away the Women's Cross-Country 30-Kilometre Freestyle event as they took all the three top positions in the competition. Marit Bjoergen took the gold medal for her country in an hour 11 minutes and 05.2 seconds whereas here team mates Therese Johaug and Kristin Stoermer Steira took the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Julia Dujmovits of Austria won the gold medal in the Women’s Snowboard Ladies' Parallel Slalom event after defeating Germany’s Anke Karstens in the Big Final. Amelie Kober of Germany won the bronze medal in the tournament.

Russian Vic Wild won his second Olympic gold after beating Žan Košir of Slovenia in the Big Final of the Snowboard Men's Parallel Slalom whereas Benjamin Karl of Austria won the bronze medal in the competition.

The hosts also took the gold medal in the Biathlon Men's 4×7.5-kilometer Relay after finishing the race in an hour 12 minutes and 15.9 seconds. The silver medal was won by Germany as they completed the track in an hour 12 minutes and 19.4 seconds whereas Austria won  the bronze medal after finishing in an hour 13 minutes and 10.3 seconds.

Russia is leading the medals table of Sochi Winter Olympics with 12 gold medals followed by Norway and Canada with their 11 and 9 nine golds respectively.
