DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Local markets have been closed  after the death of nine people who were died when they accidentally fell into a canal, where a sugar mill discharging its chemical waste, ARY News reported on Saturday.

The dead included five members of a family. The funeral prayers of two victims were offered at Ramak Bazaar.

Police has registered the case of the deaths against the management of the local sugar mills and detained seven officials of the mills including G.M. Ashfaq Ahmed, Abdul Aziz, health safety officer Ateeq ur Rehman, purchase officer Khawaja Shahzad Ahmed, admin officer Khushdil Khan, security officer Muhammad Afzal Malik and admin officer ethanol plant Sarfaraz.

The nine people were died when they accidentally fell into the canal, contaminated with poisonous waste of the sugar mill.

According to reports, 15 to 20 people were going above the canal when two of them lost balance and fell into it. In an attempt to rescue their companions, more people jumped into the canal that was filled with industrial effluent.

Majority of those jumped into canal breathed their last and nine bodies were recovered by the rescue officials. Eight were rescued in a fainted condition.
