HYDERABAD: A young engineer has murdered his girlfriend by throttling in India’s Hyderabad over persistent demand to marry her.

The victim, B Lavanya, was also a system engineer at TCS Synergy Park in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, while the suspect Sunil Kumar (25) worked in the same city.

The 25-year-old young woman had gone missing on April 7 and her phone was switched off. Family of the victim did not know whereabouts of Kumar. However, police arrested the boyfriend on Saturday through obtaining her call details.

Sunil Kumar told that they had fallen in love during their studies at CMR College of Engineering and Technology. Later, they both got jobs and were going to marry very soon, but their relation turned sour and Kumar started avoiding discussion on marriage, he said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) S Ravi Kumar said under pressure from his girlfriend, the young man lied to her family that he wanted to marry her and he had got a job offer in Muscat, so he asked them to send Lavanya along him as he had arranged a job interview for her too.

“After Lavanya’s family dropped them at the RGI Airport on April 4, Sunil told her that their flight was cancelled and checked into the Airport Lodge saying that they will take the next day’s flight,” he said.

“Lavanya again raised the topic of marriage at the lodge and an argument broke out between them. Sunil throttled her and then stuffed the body in a suitcase on April 5 evening. That night he took the body to Sooraram in the city and dumped it in a drain,” the ACP said, adding that the body was hidden in the drain in front of a school.

He said the body was recovered after Sunil Kumar confessed to killing her.
