LAHORE: The Supreme Court on Sunday summoned details of the funds spent on the construction of the New Islamabad International Airport.

Headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar a two-judge was hearing a suo motu case pertaining to rainwater flooding the newly constructed Islamabad airport at the apex court’s Lahore registry.

He directed the authorities concerned to furnish CCTV footage of the airport awash with rainwater on next hearing.

He also summoned the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) managing director and Islamabad station manager on June 13.

A Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) official told the judges that the video circulating on social media showing the Islamabad airport swamped with rainwater is a year and a half old.

Massive construction flaws were revealed in the newly-inaugurated airport as the roofs started dripping and, HR and Briefing area along with passenger lounge were spotted flooding with rainwater during the recent rainfall in the capital.

After 13 years of construction, the new airport could not even protect passengers and their luggage from the rainfall. The passengers were reportedly seen scrambling for shelter during the rain inside the recently-furnished structure.

It is worth mentioning here that former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi inaugurated the New Islamabad Airport on May 1, 2018. More than Rs100 billion were spent on this project and its construction was started in April 2007.
