KARACHI: The Supreme Court Karachi Registry on Thursday expressed its surprise as to how a building could be auctioned off if it was under the possession of Evacuee Trust Property Board (Matruka Waqf Imlaak Board), ARY News reported.

The court was hearing a case pertaining the ownership of Haroon Moosa Building in Karachi’s Saddar Town, ARY News reported.

Commissioner of Karachi Mr Iftikhar Shalwani’s report was submitted in the court on the ownership of the said building.

Several persons and departments have laid their claims on the Haroon Moosa Building, prompting the court to order an inquiry into its ownership.

According to the report, the building was under the ownership of Evacuee Trust Property Board (Matruka Waqf Imlaak Board) but it was auctioned in 1961.

On this, Justice Gulzar Ahmed expressed its surprise as to how a building owned by the Board could be auctioned.

“What is going on in Karachi’s old city areas?”, the court questioned. “Who knows how many buildings of old city areas have been occupied through counterfeit documentation”, he remarked.

The court subsequently formed a two-member committee comprising Commissioner Karachi and a senior member of Board of Revenue and directed it to investigate the ownership claims on Haroon Moosa Building.

The officials were directed to submit their final report within one month.
