ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday reopened the Nandipur power project case, issuing notices to the federal authorities, Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), and Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) to come up with their respective comments.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, who headed a three-judge bench of the apex court, reopened the case on a petition filed by PML-N leader Khawaja Asif and set Thursday (tomorrow) for its hearing.

He asked the petitioner as to why he failed to resolve the issues with regard to the project when he was Minister for Water and Power.

He replied he was disengaged from the matter owing to clash of interests. At this, the chief justice questioned if he was asked to stay away from the matter, he could have at least ordered a probe into it.

The PML-N leader said a commission, headed by Justice (retd) Rehmat Ali Jafri, was tasked to probe it.

Justice Nisar said the commission has fixed responsibility for issues faced by the project. “You gave a contract to a Chinese company to run the power plant,” he added.

Inordinate delay in completion of the project increased the cost of the project, the former minister said.
